Umar ibn al-Khattab’s journey to Islam is held in high regard by Muslims around the world.
Upon learning his sister, Fatima, and brother-in-law, Said bin Zayd, had secretly converted to Islam, Umar marched to his sister’s house to question them, only to hear unfamiliar recitations and noises as he approached. In the commotion that followed, Umar tried to hit Said but accidentally struck his sister instead. Feeling ashamed and remorseful, Umar asked to read what Fatima had been reciting. This is how Umar came to read the opening lines of the chapter called Taha in the Quran:
