Over the past two years, China has taken advantage of the post-Arab Spring upheaval in Egypt to expand its influence in the country.

The rise of the Muslim Brotherhood, diminishing influence of US foreign policy interests, and the exit of risk-averse Western lenders indirectly led to unprecedented growth in Egypt-China trade relations.

While in office, President Mohamed Morsi was keen to develop Egypt-China relations.
