In 2012, the United Nations warned that the Gaza Strip would be unlivable by 2020. The assessment was in large part due to fears Gazans would be unable to meet the demands of an increased population and that humanitarian crises would be compounded by foreseeable rises in population density. Though it is often difficult to consider long-term issues in the midst of an immediate crisis, the perception of a looming calamity is largely fueling Palestinian support for militants—and the humanitarian crisis is only getting worse.
