After over a decade of armed conflict, the American public today appears to be burnt out on war. For the first time in recent memory, polls show that popular opinion is staunchly against embarking on another military engagement in the Middle East.

Despite impassioned pleas from the Obama administration and nightly news coverage of civilian deaths in Syria, a recent poll showed only 19% of Americans in favour of launching a military intervention in the country. Even when responders were asked to factor in recent chemical weapons attacks in the suburbs of Damascus – video footage of which featured prominently in the media – the percentage of Americans favouring intervention went no higher than 29%.
